Many of you may have heard of this term “detox” – it has been applied to things like slimming teas, digestive products…and some even talk about “detoxing” your life: by cutting out clutter in your home or toxic people.

But detoxing isn’t just another trend. Studies how it can actually improve both your physical and mental health. It can also be great for your skin too. This is especially true if you do a “skin detox”.

After all, your skin is important – it’s the largest organ in your entire body, and it’r protecting you from external pollutants day in and day out.

What exactly is a skin detox and does it actually work?

A skin detox is any routine you do that helps to purge your skin of dirt, impurities, congestion, and any other contaminants.

Everyone handles skin detoxes differently.

For some, they might use more exfoliation to remove build-up of dead cells. Another person might cut back on makeup for a few days. You can also try to avoid products with chemicals, or drink extra water every single day… The choice is yours.

But don’t worry, I’ll share my favorite 5-day skin detox with you in just a moment.

Whatever you decide, even one small change will make a difference. When impurities have been cleared out, your skin gets a much needed break. Your skin’s pH levels are restored and your skin gets a fresh start.

Do you really need a Skin Detox?

Well, as mentioned before, your skin is the largest organ in your body. It’s not simply a covering for your muscles, bones, and other organs. It acts like a frontline warrior combating viruses, bacteria, infections, free radicals, toxins and much more. It also has a major role to play in your body temperature, sense of touch, and even the production of Vitamin D (essential for strong bones, muscle and heart health).

Now, normally, your skin is perfectly capable of detoxing by itself. However, if you’ve been eating junk food, feeling stressed, or sleeping without removing your makeup, your skin may find it difficult to keep up.

5 Signs it’s time for a Skin Detox

If any of the following has been bothering you, you must definitely need a skin detox.

1| Breakouts, dull, dehydrated skin

Your skin is congested. Things like dead cells, pollutants, excess oil, and makeup can result in congestion of your skin’s pores.

2| Redness of skin, pimples, inflammation

These are a result of stress. If you’ve been experiencing high stress over a prolonged period of time, it shows on your face. These are symptoms of increased oil production and slowed cell renewal rate.

3| Acne

Excessive processed sugar intake in your diet can contribute significantly to the development of acne. Even things that people typically think are healthy, like flavored yogurt, are usually jam-packed with sugar.

4| Dull, sallow skin that has lost its bounce (elasticity), premature wrinkles and fine lines

Your lifestyle habits may need some tweaking. Smoking and excessive alcohol not only take a toll on your body, but especially your skin. Or you might not be getting enough quality sleep or not drinking enough water.

5| Some other tell-tale signs include

  • Patchy, uneven skin tone

  • Sagging, wrinkling skin

The good news is, you don’t have to completely change your diet or give up sugar forever in order to give your skin the cleanse it needs to reset.

Here are the steps you will follow for the next 5 days so your skin can feel brand-new. If you want radiant and youthful-looking skin, be sure to follow these steps consistently!

Your Daily Plan

Step 1: Commit to a daily skincare routine

Take care of your skin, morning and night, with the right products, in the right sequence.

Step 2: Drink the right amount of water

Hydration is crucial for healthy skin. Make sure you’re drinking the right amount of water!

Step 3: Start your day with a green smoothie

Know which foods to eat and which to avoid for better skin.

Step 4: Use a weekly mask

Use DIY mask recipes every day to detox, purify, and nourish your skin.

Step 5: Get your beauty sleep

Sleep for 7-9 hours each night so your body can restore and rebalance your skin.

STEP 1: Commit to a daily skincare routine

With the plethora of skin products and beauty trends out on the market these days, it’s almost impossible to narrow down exactly what are suitable for your skin, much less know what else to do.

The Korean skincare routine lists a whopping 12 steps just for a daily maintenance! But don’t fret, all you need is a simple routine.

Here are 6 simple steps YOU need to do – no exorbitant price tag or tiring manoeuvres necessary. For the next 5 days, make it a point to commit to a skincare routine in both morning and night:

USE A GENTLE CLEANSER

  • Avoid alcohol and skin irritants like sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and fragrances. For oily skin, gel-type cleansers suit best. For dry and sensitive skin, stick to milk, lotion, or cream cleansers.

USE A DAILY SERUM

STEP 2: Drink enough water every day

Your body requires a certain amount of water each day to perform at its best. Water keeps your cells hydrated after being filtered by your kidneys and gets absorbed into your bloodstream. So, drinking enough water daily is crucial for hydrating your entire body in general (in order to hydrate your skin as well) and for flushing out toxins.

BUT HOW MUC WATER iS ENOUGH?

Every individual needs a different amount of water due to a multitude of factors: your activity levels, size, metabolism, general health, and even where you live (hot vs cool climate).

Here’s an easy way to calculate how much water YOU need: take your weight, divide it by 2, and that’s the number of ounces you need to drink per day. For example, if you weigh 160 pounds, you should be getting in at least in at 80 ounces of water daily, and up to 160 ounces if you exercise or live somewhere hot.

STEP 3: Start your day with a detoxing green smoothie

Beauty begins on the inside. If you’re not eating right, your skin will show it. Healthy skin starts from within. All too often, I see clients come to me who are battling terrible acne or rosacea and when I ask them about their diet, it becomes apparent that they aren’t doing their skin any favors by what they’re choosing to eat.

For the next 5 days, try to avoid the following foods:

  1. Excess salt and sugar
  2. Excess red meat
  3. Lots of carbohydrates
  4. Dairy alcohol
  5. Excess caffeine

When your body is healthy, it shows on your skin.

I want you to start every morning with a green smoothie for the next 5 days. This green smoothie recipe is one of my all-time favorites and it utilizes both spinach and kale – two of the most nutrient-dense dark, leafy green vegetables:

Spinach is high in Vitamin C, Vitamin K, and folate, all of which are essential nutrients for improving skin tone and complexion.

Kale, which has gained a lot of popularity in recent years, has a large amount of Vitamin A, a necessary vitamin for increasing cell growth, and ultimately allowing dead skin cells to be replenished by healthy new cells.

Glowing Skin Green Smoothie

You’ll need…

  • 1 cup blueberries
  • 1 cup blackberries
  • 1 slice of ginger
  • handful of spinach
  • 1 cup Kale
  • 1 beet
  • crushed ice

What you need to do…

  1. Add all ingredients to a blender. Blend on high until smooth. Feel free to adjust honey or water for desired consistency and taste. Enjoy!

STEP 4: Do a weekly face mask

A great way to feed your skin and pump it full of nutrients is with a weekly mask.

The good news: Your refrigerator can stock some pretty impressive skincare recipes. After all, just think about all the nourishing vitamins and minerals found in fruits and vegetables.

Let’s see: There’s vitamin C in lemons and oranges, vitamins E and A in avocados, calcium and potassium in bananas… you get the picture.

Today, I’m going to share my absolute favorite detoxing and nourishing DIY masks. You can use any of the below recipes for a face mask. Do a mask once a week.

DIY FACE MASK RECIPES

1| Exfoliating Honey Face Mask

Ingredients:

  • 2 Tablespoons raw honey
  • 2 Tablespoons rose tea (brew a cup of rose tea and let it cool)
  • 1/4 cup oatmeal
  • 3 drops rose-hip oil

Directions:

In a bowl, stir all ingredients together, apply to your face and leave on for 10 minutes. Rinse with tepid water and gently pat dry.

2| Brightening antioxidant berry mask

Ingredients:

  • 5 Blueberries
  • 5 Raspberries
  • 5 Blackberries

Directions:

In a bowl, mix ingredients together and mash them together. Keep stirring with a fork until it looks like a think fruit juice. Apply to your face with your fingers over your kitchen sink (in case you drop some berries) and leave on for 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse with tepid water and gently pat dry.

3| Miracle mask

Ingredients:

  • 1 tsp charcoal powder
  • 1/2 tsp green clay
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp ginger powder

Directions:

In a bowl, mix ingredients together. Add enough water to mixture to form a paste. Apply to your face and leave on for 10 minutes. Rinse with tepid water and gently pat dry. Follow with your favorite serum.

STEP 5: Get your beauty sleep

Finally, this step is one that is so easy but sadly often forgotten. If you’ve ever skipped a good night’s rest, you would know that your skin looks… well, horrible the next day. Never mind the obvious dark under-eye circles – some people may even experience puffy eyelids, pimple breakouts, pale skin, wrinkles and fine lines, or evn notice the corners of your mouth becoming saggy. And scientists say all this can happen from just ONE night of poor sleep!

Why is it so important?

Your body goes through its repair and restoration process during your sleep. While you sleep, the blood flow in your skin increases, while rebuilding collagen and healing from harmful UV damage, to prevent sunspots and unsightly wrinkles. So if you don’t get a good night’s rest, you’re actually causing your skin to age faster, and to recover slower from environmental pollutants.

How many hours of sleep do you need?

The recommended amount of hours needed for quality skin restoration is 7 to 9 hours daily. It may not always be possible to hit this number of hours all the time, but the attempt for consistency is key. It’s fine if you have a couple of ‘off’ days if you have a girl’s night out or have to work late, but you should strive to sleep 7 to 9 hours to let your skin heal itself overnight.

How to get the best beauty sleep?

1| Cleanse and moisturize your face before you sleep

  • Remember Step 1’s daily skincare routine? Repeat it at night as well before you sleep. Cleanse, serum, eye cream, moisturize. NEVER sleep with your makeup still on!

2| Sleep on your back if you can. Sleeping on your side can contribute to wrinkles as you compress your face on pillows.

  • However, if you must sleep on your side, choose a skin-friendly material for your pillow such as silk or satin. They’re great for minimizing hair loss due to decreased friction, too.

3| Keep your head elevated with an extra pillow or a sleeping wedge.

  • This helps with acid reflux, nasal issues, and snoring – all of which can affect your sleep quality, thereby affecting your skin. Also, the elevated position improves blood flow, helping to prevent eyebags and dark circles.

4| Make sure your bed is not exposed to direct sunlight.

  • A sunlit room is hardly conducive for good sleep. Move your bed away from the window or install some blackout blinds or curtains.

Here’s a sample day of how your new and improved daily routine will look like:

Sample Day

MORNING

Good morning! Start your day with a big glass of water. It’s important to start the morning with water to clear out toxins from the night before. Then, before breakfast, make sure to wash your face, add serum, your daily moisturizer, and sunscreen. (Leave the eye cream for nighttime.)

BREAKFAST

Make your green smoothie, then sit at the table and enjoy. Try avoiding your phone or TV. Be present. If you can get outside for some sunshine, even if just for a few minutes, do it!

MID-MORNING

Did you know…dehydration is often mistaken for hunger? Instead of an early snack, grab some water. Again, remember for the next 5 days, you should try to drink 1/2 your body weight in water daily.

LUNCH

Step away from the computer. Eat whole foods. Enjoy a fresh salad. Or simply try to add a vegetable to every meal. If you are having pasta, add in a handful of spinach. Make it easy!

AFTERNOON

Afternoon slump? Don’t grab more caffeine. Check in to see if you’ve had enough water! Use your tracker at the end of this guide to measure how much water you’ve had today.

DINNER

Dinner is a time of connection. Put your phone away. Enjoy a meal with friends or family.

BEDTIME

Give yourself time to wind down. Stop eating and drinking about 2 hours before bed. Make sure you stop using phone 30-60 minutes before bedtime.

If you need a little support to drift off to sleep, enjoy a hot cup of caffeine-free chamomile tea. Of course, don’t forget to wash your face. Add your serum, eye cream and moisturizer.

If you’ve not used your DIY mask yet, then you can do it one evening before bed! Use the mask right after you wash your face. Then wash the mask off, add serum, eye cream, and moisturizer.

Then it’s off to bed! Enjoy 7-9 hours of sleep. Your body and skin will thank you.
